The Newfoundland is a very large dog with
a personality to match. The Newfie breed has been around for a long time
and is in the working class of dogs. They are loving and loyal and
extremely good with children. The Newfie is definitely not the dog for
everyone. Our dogs range from 125-180 pounds as adults, have plenty of slobber
which seems to cling to anything that their beautiful hair does not. They
love water and will seek out about any puddle within a mile, love to go
for rides and walks but are most content when they can be snoozing at your
feet. The Newfie has webbed feet that serve to make them strong swimmers
and are known the world over for their water rescues of both people and
cargo.
Newfoundlands are very intelligent
dogs and are very easy to train. We strongly recommend you take your
Newfie to obedience class so that others will enjoy being around your dog
as much as you do. Contrary to what many think, a Newfie does not
require acres in which to roam but does need adequate room for exercise.
They love to go for walks but are very happy just having you take them
with you whenever and wherever possible. They are very affectionate dogs
and do best when they are not left alone all day long. They love to be
groomed because that means that a person is touching them. They are
“leaners” and seem to always be able to find a way for a part of them to
be touching you. If you can handle this, you are certainly a good
candidate for one of our babies.
Harborlight Newfoundlands is home to several Newfs
who are active therapy dogs specializing in work with children with autism.
